The Story of the god Atum in Kemetic Spirituality

Aten and Atum are two distinct deities in ancient Kemetic / Egyptian mythology, each with unique characteristics and roles within the pantheon.

Aten

Aten is the disk of the sun in ancient Egyptian mythology and is associated primarily with the monotheistic religious reforms of Pharaoh Akhenaten during the 18th dynasty. Akhenaten declared Aten the sole god, initiating a major shift from the traditional polytheistic worship. This period is known as the Amarna Period.

Atum

Atum is one of the earliest and most important deities in ancient Kemetic mythology, primarily associated with creation and the setting sun.

  • Atum is considered a primeval god who created himself out of the chaotic waters of Nun. He is associated with the Heliopolitan creation myth.  As a solar deity, Atum represents the setting sun and is often depicted in human form, sometimes wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Kemet, symbolizing his role as a unifying force.

Both Aten and Atum highlight different aspects of the sun’s power and its central place in Kemetic & Egyptian religious thought, but they were worshipped and understood in very different contexts and periods.
